Partly printed document signed by James Madison, as President, and James Monroe, as Secretary of State. New York, 8 December 1812. 1 page, ## x ## in. With two wafer seals, countersigned by Collector of the Port of New York David Gelston, and witnessed in all four languages.
A four-language 1812 ship's papers boldly signed by President James Madison (1751-1836) and future President James Monroe (1758-1831) as Secretary of State. The passport was granted to Captain Lemuel Bourne, the captain of the schooner Zebra departing New York for Bordeaux with a cargo of potash (ashes) and cotton.
