Title to lower margin with caption: "Proclaimed January 1st 1863, by Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States. / 'Proclaim liberty throughout All the land unto All the inhabitants thereof' -- Lev XXV. 10".
A dramatic portrayal of Abraham Lincoln as the Great Emancipator, issued shortly after his assassination by the famed printmakers Currier & Ives. An enslaved family approaches the President, the man bending to kiss his outstretched hand with broken shackles on the ground. Lincoln's other hand points to the heavens, suggesting the divine authority of emancipation. The symbolism is emphasized by a quote from Leviticus included in the lower margin "Proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all inhabitants thereof."
