In the Style of Li Tang (1066-1150): Fisherman under Snow-Covered Bamboo, Hanging scroll, ink and color on silk, unsigned, four seals; titled and attributed to Li Tang to the right mount, the inscription dated 1524. Ming Dynasty, 38 x 18 inches (96.5 x 45.5 cm), Provenance: Senator Theodore Francis Green (1867-1966), Rhode Island, and thence by descent within the family. This painting is an example of the Zhe School's style of Song Dynasty painting. Zhe School was a painting circle formed in the 15th Century based in the Zhejiang area. Zhe School painting masters include Dai Jin (1388-1462) and Wu Wei (1459-1508). The painting style mainly developed from the Southern Song and Yuan Dynasty traditions, but with a free, quick and succinct manner.Since paintings of the Zhe School share a similar style to their Song and Yuan counterparts, they were at times attributed wrongly to the Song and Yuan masters. One example is "Raising a Cup to the Moon in Jest," of the National Palace Museum,Taipei. The painting had long been considered a work by the Southern Song artist Ma Yuan (c. 1160-1225) up till the 1970s, recent scholars have determined that painting, and the hidden seal mark, belongs to Zhong Li (active late 15th Century).Although this painting was attributed to the Song dynasty painter Li Tang (1066-1150), the free and unrestrained brush works indicate this painting to be by a Zhe school painter in the Ming Dynasty.
