Description
Year: 17th century
Size: 44" x 36"
Medium: Oil
Description: Large oil on canvas Old Master painting from the 17th century, depicting Mary Magdalene's conversion. This allegory, which dates back to the intimate toilette scene of circa 1630 and features a resplendently clad Mary taking off her jewellery, serves both apologetic and moral reasons in keeping with the Counter Reformation. The picture depicts Mary Magdalene's initial actions toward her religious conversion, including her removal of her priceless jewelry and her renunciation of earthly possessions in favor of a simple and solitary life in the desert. Following the Reformation, the Magdalene continued to be one of the most well-liked saints because she was an easy-to-identify reformed sinner.Beautifully conditioned and presented in a lavish gilded frame. Size: about 44" by 36" when framed.
