A large French gobelin tapestry depicting the legend of Coriolanus, Tours, early 17th centuryA finely knotted tapestry of coloured wool. An energetic battle scene takes place foregrounded in front of an architectonic scenery: Coreolanus, in splendid armour, stormily attacks one of his aediles, who recoils with expressive gestures. The scene in the centre is flanked by tired looking figures. Fine surrounding border with festoons of fruits and leaves. Rubbed and worn in places. Dimensions ca. 260 x 340 cm.The tapestry cartoon was designed by Henri Lerambert (1550-1608) and Antoine Caron (1521-1599) in Paris. An identical tapestry can be found in the Collection of Tours, Hotel du Département, conseil général.Condition: II -
