CDV photograph of Andrew Gregg Curtin (1815/1817-1894), the wartime Governor of Pennsylvania. Curtin boldly signed this carte below his image. Elected as a moderate Republican, he provided vital aid to the northern cause after the outbreak of the Civil War. After the Battle of Gettysburg, Curtin was instrumental in establishing the national cemetery there and persuaded President Lincoln to attend the dedication. Curtin was next to the president when he gave his immortal Gettysburg Address.
