Description
Regulation Civil War Cavalry Regimental flag, c. 1861-1865. Hand-painted and gilded on silk. Approx. 34 x 31 inches. Trimmed on three sides with gold silk fringe.
Extremely fine Federal regulation hand-painted cavalry standard. Considered one of the most difficult to obtain American flags, especially in such fine condition. The design is dominated by a spread winged eagle grasping arrows and an olive branch in its talons with a patriotic Federal shield superimposed upon its breast. A gold riband is held in the eagle's beak under 13 stars arranged in a lunate pattern. A second riband adorned with gold foliate motifs is painted below. The design, conforming to 1861 regulations, is associated by military supplier William H. Horstmann of Philadelphia.
An exquisite example. The flag is currently framed after light conservation. For a full condition report, please inquire.
