Clemens, Samuel Langhorne (aka Mark Twain.) THE CELEBRATED JUMPING FROG OF CALAVERAS COUNTY. New York: Webb, 1867. 6.75" x 4.5". Ad leaf and 198 pp. Bound in publisher's maroon cloth over beveled boards, front board lettered in gilt and with jumping frog in gilt, rear board with jumping frog in blind; housed in a custom drop-spine box, with title on morocco label in gilt. *********** FIRST EDITION, TWAIN'S FIRST BOOK. FIRST ISSUE, with ad leaf at front and unbroken type on pages 21, 66 and 198 as called for. Twain had previously been published in short form in a couple of earlier publications. A brief sketch from this book appeared a year earlier, in 1866, on pages 29-32 of "Beadle's Dime No. 3 Book of Fun" under the title "Jim Smiley's Frog." BAL 3310.
Condition
Binding has been expertly recased and gutters with discreet tissue repairs, slight skew to spine, spine toned and some light soiling/staining to boards. Contents with occasional minor finger-soiling or similar, mostly clean. Good.
