A lawyer, he was first elected in 1932, and became Secretary of State at the age of 31. In 1942, he joined the Resistance in London, but disagreed with de Gaulle and resigned in 1945. In 1954, after the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu, he became President of the French Council.
