Sur pied circulaire à deux étages repoussés d'une bordure d'oves, l'ombilic repoussé de cuirs centrés de masques d'homme barbus alternant avec des bouquets de fleurs, le fût en forme de vase sur terrasse cannelée appliqué de trois consoles terminées par des têtes de griffons alternées de masques grotesques, la coupe repoussée et ciselée d'une scène figurant "l'Humanité avant le Déluge" d'après une gravure de Johann Sadeler, bordée d'une couronne de laurier, la sous-coupe repoussée de trois cartouches auriculaires figurant des muses illustrant l'hiver, le printemps et l'automne alternées de grandes vases des fleurs et fruits, poinçon postérieur, trace d’essai, trace de poinçon sur le bord du pied

A LATE RENAISSANCE DUTCH SILVER TAZZA, PROBABLY DELFT OR THE HAGUE, CIRCA 1615
On spreading domed double foot with egg-and-dart border, the centre chased with scrolling reserves centred by bearded old men mask interspersed with bouquet of flowers, the stem formed as a vase applied with three bracket with griffin terminal, the bowl embossed and chased with the 'State of Mankind before the Flood', after an engraving by Jan Sadeler, the rim engraved with laurel wreath, the underside cup chased with three auricular cartouches each centred by an allegory of winter, spring and autumn flanked by vases of flowers, marked on foot: trace of mark, later control mark and striche
AFTER AN ENGRAVING BY SADELER
The scene depicted in the bowl is taken from an engraving dated c. 1580 after a drawing, 'Mankind Awaiting the Flood', by Dirck Barendsz (1534-1592), a Dutch Renaissance painter from Amsterdam who trained in Italy, notably with Titian (see J.R. Judson, Dirck Barendsz, 1970, pp. 126-31, nos. 71-2) and whose works show the influence of Italian imagery.
Jan Sadeler (1550-1600) was an engraver and publisher. Born in Brussels, Jan was the eldest of three brothers, Aegidius I and Raphael I, who were all trained in their father's workshop as engravers of ornaments on steel and iron, intended to be inlaid with gold or silver. Jan specialised in copper engraving, executing plates based on drawings by Crispin Van den Broeck. He then moved to Antwerp and Cologne, and from 1588 to 1595 he worked as an engraver at the court of Munich with his brother Raphaël I. In 1595, they both left Munich and moved to Venice via Verona.A prolific engraver, he received an imperial privilege in 1581, renewed in 1593, and a papal privilege around 1598. Jan died in Venice in 1600 and his son Justus took over the business, while Raphaël I returned to Munich.
DELFT OR THE HAGUE
The design of the foot and stem can be found on several goblets or tazze made in Delft and The Hague in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. These can be compared with the Saint Christopher Guild cup sold in the Rothschild collection in New York on 11 October 2023, lot 19, as well as the other Gorimchen Guild cups that completed this set and are partly held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

John Forrest Hayward was an internationally renowned expert in the history of European decorative arts and furnishings. He worked for the Victoria and Albert Museum, first specialising in metalwork and later furniture and woodwork. He became Deputy Keeper in 1956, before accepting a position at Sotheby’s, London, as Associate Director in the Works of Art and Armor Department. He retired from Sotheby’s in 1981. Hayward published many articles on the decorative arts including Hughenot Silver in England (1959), Art of the Gunmaker (1962/63), and Virtuoso Goldsmiths & the Triumph of Mannerism 1540-1620 (1976).

D'APRÈS UNE GRAVURE DE SADELER
La scène représentée dans la coupe est tirée d'une gravure datée vers 1580 d'après un dessin, Mankind Awaiting the Deluge, de Dirck Barendsz (1534-1592), un peintre néerlandais de la Renaissance originaire d'Amsterdam qui s'est formé en Italie, notamment auprès du Titien (voir J.R. Judson, Dirck Barendsz, 1970, pp. 126-31, nos. 71-2) et dont les œuvres témoignent de l'influence de l'imagerie italienne.
Jan Sadeler (1550-1600) était graveur et éditeur. Né à Bruxelles, Jan est l'aîné de trois frères, Aegidius I et Raphael I, qui ont tous été formés dans l'atelier de leur père comme graveurs d'ornements sur acier et fer, destinés à être incrustés d'or ou d'argent. Graveur prolifique, il reçoit un privilège impérial en 1581, renouvelé en 1593, et un privilège papal vers 1598. Jan meurt à Venise en 1600 et son fils Justus reprend l'entreprise tandis que Raphaël Ier retourne à Munich.
DELFT OU LA HAYE
Le dessin du pied et du fût de la coupe se retrouve sur plusieurs coupes ou tazze fabriquées à Delft et La Haye à la fin du XVIe - début du XVIIe siècle. On peut les comparer à la coupe de corporation de Saint Christophe vendue dans la collection Rothschild à New York le 11 octobre 2023 lot 19 ainsi que les autres coupes de corporation de Gorinchem complétant cet ensemble et en partie conservées au Rijksmuseum à Amsterdam.

John Forrest Hayward était un expert de renommée internationale dans le domaine de l'histoire des arts décoratifs et de l'ameublement européens.
