Aaron Burr 1820 Engraving, G. Parker after John Vanderlyn
Item Details
Description
Aaron Burr Vice President of the United States 1802.
Engraving by George Parker (British, died 1868) after 1802 portrait by John Vanderlyn (American, 1775-1852).
Facsimile signature of Aaron Burr. Inscribed in plate J. Vanderlyn Pinxt, G.Parker Sculpt.
Sheet 9 x 5 inches.
Aaron Burr provided John Vanderlyn with financial support and patronage for twenty years. Burr arranged for him to study in Philadelphia, and then in Paris in 1796.
Burr left the Army in 1779 and began practicing law in New York City, very near to where Alexander Hamilton established his law office. They often defended opposite sides of the same case.
Burr became vice-president to Thomas Jefferson in 1800, But Jefferson disliked Burr and removed him from his ticket in the 1804 election. Burr ran for governor of New York and lost. Burr blamed Alexander Hamilton for launching a smear campaign against him and challenged Hamilton to a duel after he refused to deny statements he made against Burr. Hamilton was killed, but due to the fact Burr was still vice president his murder charge was never tried.
