Description
SHELLEY, GEORGE ERNEST
Monograph of the Nectariniidae, or Family of Sun-Birds. London: published by the author at 6 Tenterden Street, 1876-1880. Two volumes, modern three-quarter green leather by J. Rabaud, marbled sides. 13 x 9 3/4 inches (26 x 34 cm), cviii + 393121 lithographed plates by J. G. Keulemans, hand-colored by Lady Theodora Guest, with a handwritten note from the author apologizing for the original uncolored condition. Slight sunning to the spine, very slight fraying to the edges of the title and first two leaves in the first volume, the title inscribed in ink "The birds painted by Theodora Guest completed July 7 1897." Merthyn Guest's copy, with his bookplate.
The note from G. E. Shelley to Merthyr Guest apologizes for the uncolored original state of this copy and states "it appears to me hopeless to think of coloring each plate separately." However, Lady Guest (a noted anti-suffragist) undertook this project—she was a watercolorist of some talent.
