Description
For your consideration is this beautiful scrimshaw steer horn done by Niall Redmond in July of 1745. The powder horn shows a beautifully polished example with a carved section and a polished horn section. The scrimshaw depicts a Scottish man playing the bagpipes as he dances around. He is wearing a kilt and a Scottish Bonnet or tartan cap. The scrimshaw reads, "Niall Redmond His Horn ? July YE 1745 / Erin ? France And Charlie / Death To The English". The bottom shows a metal piece for a shoulder strap to be connected to, while the top, near the polished bone section shows the carved plug where the black powder would be dispensed from. The powder horn comes with a red and blue woven strap featuring small white beads throughout. The piece shows great condition despite its antique age and handling over the years. Little wear is present and no signs of damage is noted. The powder horn measures 14 1/8" L x 3" W and weighs 10 ounces. The strap measures approximately 61" in length and 1 1/2" in width.
