Item Details
Description
The lot features a scarcely seen pattern of dagger knife sheath, a Tahltan beaded trade clothe sheath. The piece would have been worn around the neck and held a dagger or dag knife. This pattern of sheath is uncommon and several 19th Century examples are in museum collections such as the Tahltan 1850-1860 Knife Sheath in the MET Museum collection and the Tahltan Knife Sheath collected from the Tlingit from George Thornton Emmons in the National Museum of the American Indian collection. This piece exhibits seed beads and pony beads in classic Northwest Coast geometric patterns on red and dark blue wool clothe with muslin lining and calico trade clothe backing on the strap. Collected from the Northwest Coast in 1985, exact age unknown. Truly a unique piece. Measures overall 26?L by 4.5?W.
