Civil War Colt Pistol and Original Provenance
Item Details
Description

Civil War Colt Army Revolver and holster belonging to Colonel Charles M. Bartruff with great provenance. Provenance includes two military muster-in-roll documents about Colonel Bartruff's military career. The first is dated 10-31-1862, where he was mustered in as a 2nd Lieutenant of the 14th Regiment of NJ Volunteers and signed November 1862.

The other muster roll is dated 9/18/1864 with the rank of Captain. Additionally, there is a handwritten letter dated 8/7/1864 from the 1st Brigade 3rd Division 6th Infantry, stating Special Orders announcing Charles M. Bartruff as 2nd Lieutenant of the brigade and signed by a commanding officer Emmerson.

The Official document from the state of New Jersey states that 16 volunteer regiments were called for by the president and accepted by the governor to war. This document appointed and commissioned Bartruff as 2nd Lieutenant of Company A 14th Regiment of New Jersey and is witnessed by Charles S. Olden and signed by Governor W. S. Johnson. From the Commanding Office of the 17th Regiment of New Jersey dated 7/31/1862, Bartruff is appointed as Sargent Major of the 14th Regiment and signed by a commanding officer. Another letter from the State of New Jersey Office Adjutant General in Trenton dated 4/12/1893, states Bartruff was mustered in as a private and shows rank up, but that office has no record of him performing duties as a 2nd Lieutenant or Captain before being commissioned or any mention on muster roll out, and that office did not have bi-monthly muster rolls. Correspondence letter from State of New Jersey Office Adjutant General in Trenton, dated 5/3/1892 from William L. Stryker to Colonel Charles M. Bartruff.

From the Department of The Interior Bureau of Pensions Washington, D.C. a Notice of Issue and Fees Dated 11/01/1897 signed by the commissioner on pension due to him with instructions on how to receive the pension. The last letter appears to have been written by Bartruff's daughter to Mr. Rowe seeking information on her father's military career and inquiring about Washington's Light Infantry as she couldn't find any mention of her father being a member. It appears part of that letter is missing. The small tin-type photo is believed to be Colonel Charles M. Bartruff. On the inside flap of the holster, the Charles Bartruff is written. These items were purchased from the family in 1961. Everything varies in size, for reference, the gun in its leather case measures 15 in. long by 6 1/4 in. tall by 2 1/8 in. deep.
