Beatrix (Beatrice) Sherman, American, 1894-1975, 9 full length silhouettes of United States Mayors, Governors and Senators, includes Henry Rodman Barker (15th Mayor of Providence Rhode Island), Martin Gras (New Hampshire), George G, Ward (Birmingham Alabama), Walter Eli Clark (Governor of Alaska), Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin(Governor of Maryland),Robert Livingston Beeckman (52nd Governor of Rhode Island), James Rolph Jr. (Governor of California), John W. Weeks (Senator of Massachusetts), J. Hamilton Lewis (Senator of Illinois), 8 autographed, verso artist stamped, artists studio advertisement, some with artist personal notations.
Biography: Beatrix Sherman styled herself after 19th C. French silhouette artist Auguste Edouart. Sherman, like Edouart, kept books with an extra copy of each sitter's silhouette enabling her to create an extensive personal archive that included both the silhouettes and the sitter's (sic.) autographs. Sherman traveled extensively, established a permanent studio in Manhattan throughout the 1950’s. She attended art classes at The Art Students League, eventually becoming a lifetime member. From an early age, she had begun copyrighting silhouettes of several of the famous people she cut. Sherman’s subjects include all the U.S. Presidents, as well as other politicians, military leaders, writers, royalty, prominent businessmen and women, socialites, athletes, artists, theatre, film actors, producers and directors.
