Irish Oil on Canvas, Ca. Mid 19th C., "Portrait of Francis White", H 28" W 22.75" | Unsigned. Half length portrait of Francis White (1787-1859) wearing a grey coat, cravat at his neck and holding a book. Francis White was a surgeon and advocate for the mentally ill, helping to introduce the 1845 Lunatics Act in Ireland which required an inspector of asylums to have a medical degree and changed the status of individuals committed from prisoners to patients. in 1846 he was appointed the first inspector of asylums in Ireland after the act's passage. Having a giltwood and gesso frame, H 35.5", W 30".
Condition
Original canvas. Small puncture in the upper right. Stretcher impressions. Overall craquelure. Overall varnish fluoresces under UV light.
