George A. Custer Signed 1870 Promissory Note, Very Rare
Signed check
George Custer signed promissory note, Topeka, Kansas, dated November 1, 1870. Signed "George A. Custer", promising to pay $400 to John C. Howard within six months of the note's date, with an interest rate of "two five cents" and secured by a mortgage. Stamped "PAID" on May 31, 1871. The note is signed by several others and stamped on verso. 1p, measuring 8.25" x 3.25". Flattened folds and edge toning. The legal stamp and several cancellation cuts pass through Custer's signature. Large, bold signature.
George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) was a United States Army officer and cavalry commander in the American Civil War and the American Indian Wars. He secured no fewer than 12 long-term and brevet promotions between 1861-1865, including the rank of Brigadier General in 1863 and the rank of Major General in 1865. He became one of the Union Army's youngest generals at age 23 and participated in nearly all of the major engagements of the Civil War, including the Battles of Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, and Yellow Tavern, along with the Sieges of Yorktown and Petersburg. Six years after signing this note Custer would be killed at the disastrous Battle of Little Bighorn.
