1846 Physiognomy Essays DUTCH Lavater Illustrated Occult Phrenology FINE BINDING
“If you wish to appear agreeable in society, you must consent to be taught many things which you know already.”
? Johann Kaspar Lavater
Johann Casper Lavater was an 18th-century philosopher who was well known for his essays on physiognomy. His beliefs and teachings on physiognomy did not always coincide with Zwinglian philosophies, but he is credited with being the first to introduce the idea that “physiognomy related to the specific character traits of individuals, rather than general types.” (Baggerman)
This 1867 English translation of Lavaters “Physiognomy” was done by Thomas Holcroft and published in London by Tegg. It is notable for including more than 400 engraved figures and facial profiles of both humans and animals.
