Description
J. Steven Manolis
(American, Contemporary)
"Chaos", 2003
acrylic on paper
signed, titled and dated en verso.
Float-mounted and framed.
38" x 50", framed 40-3/4" x 53"
Notes: A modern-day master of Abstract Expressionism, J. Steven Manolis is well known for the brightly colored abstractions that have garnered him critical acclaim. Though originally a businessman with Solomon Brothers, Manolis's passion for painting never diminished, and he began collecting art as well as devoting his time to the Advisory Board of the National Academy of Design. Privately, he worked for decades under the tutelage of the great Color Field painter Wolf Kahn, while continuing to work on Wall Street by day. Finally, in 2014, he made his debut with a solo exhibition at Chase Edwards Gallery and began pursuing his dream of an art career full time. His rise was meteoric, receiving praise from a host of critics, exhibiting widely in many galleries and museums, and eventually opening his own studio-gallery in Miami, Manolis Projects.
As the founder of the Miami School of Abstract Expressionism, a term coined by renowned critic Donald Kuspit, Manolis's work primarily focuses on color, abstraction, and geometry. His use of watercolor techniques with acrylics allows him to create monumental cavases, such as Chaos (2003). Full of dynamic freshness, Chaos illustrates Manolis's practice perfectly. Glowing with hues varying from warm to cool tones, the expressive brushstrokes emphasize the emotive gestures of the artist and communicate his life philosophy: to live, work, and pursue ambition with unmatched passion.
