Notes: Born in Mississippi, Charles Richards moved to New Orleans in 1927 and became a reporter for the New Orleans Item newspaper. For nearly twenty years, Richards worked for newspapers throughout the South, regularly providing illustrations for his stories. In 1945, he left his reporting career and focused on becoming a full-time artist. He had a close relationship with Siobhan OíQuinn, who would often pose nude for his paintings.
