Description
The Florentines whilst bathing in the Arno, alarmed at the approach of their enemy the Pisans. Bathing soldiers hurrying to climb onto the bank and dress, surprised by news of the approach of the enemy, brought by armoured soldiers in upper right, one of whom sounds a trumpet; after Michelangelo's cartoon of the Battle of Cascina. 1799. Etching on chine collé. Etched with the title, 'Hry: Crowe del, et scul 1799' and 'Publish'd as the Act directs Oct. 1799', with a long description and account taken from Vasari, as follows: 'From the chiaro-obscuro at Holkham, by Bastiano de St. Gallo, painted 1542. It is the only copy ever made of the whole composition of Michael Angelo's cartoon, which he designed by order of Pietro Soderini, for one side of the hall of the great council of Florence - He did it in competition with Leonardo da Vinci, who painted the opposite side, and chose for his subject a battle of horsemen (a design afterwards engraved by Edelink).
