Japanese Woodblock Print, 1946, published by Takamizawa Honsha for Fugaku Shuppan-sha
SIZE IN INCHES: chuban, 8 x 10.75 inches
COMMENTS: Nihon Minzoku Zufu (Pictures of Japanese Native Customs). From the series of 12 prints done by well known sosaku hanga artists right after World War II.
"Ohshima anko" (women of Ohshima) were famous for their long black hair which they bound as "Inbonjiri-maki". They carry water buckets on top of their heads twice a day in the morning and at the evening. The "Mizu-kumi Anko" (The water dipping women of Ohshima) are also a famous tourist attraction.
MASAO MAEDA (1904-1974) was a student of Hiratsuka together with Umetaro Azechi. He took part in all important sosaku hanga print exhibitions since the 1930s. He was one of the major Sosaku Hanga artists after WWII. Favorite subjects are landscapes - eight views of Hokkaido and famous gates of Edo.
