Description: TRANQUILLUS CAIUS SUETONIUS Le Vite dei Dieci Imperatori, by Roseo Mambrino, Venice: Michiel Tramezzino, 1544 Dimensions: 4 1/4 by 6" [3], [1], [9], 232 pages. Early red leather label stamped in gilt, with four raised bands on the spine and a mottled calf binding. Endpapers with marbling, margins of text blocks stained crimson Very good, minor binding wear; bookplate attached to front pastedown: Latin text of Ex Bibliot. A. R. Scurty N. Roman historian Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, also known as Suetonius, lived from approximately AD 69 to AD 122. He wrote during the early Imperial period of the Roman Empire. De vita Caesarum, a collection of biographies of 12 later Roman emperors, including Julius Caesar and Domitian, is probably his most significant surviving work. Suetonius also wrote on politics, oratory, the day-to-day activities of Rome, and the lives of notable writers such as grammarians, historians, and poets. Many of these books have been lost, but a couple have survived in part.
