In addition to several study trips to Italy, Holland and France, he later studied in Brussels and, from 1876 on, in Paris. There he came into contact with the painting of the Barbizon School, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, Jean Francois Millet, Claude Monet, Charles Daubigny, Jules Dupre and the School of The Hague. In 1892 he moved back to Vienna and got a job at the Vienna School of Applied Arts to head the floral painting department. His painting is primarily influenced by French landscape painting and in later years increasingly shows a turn towards decorative elements.
