Description
first quarter 20th century, 137 x 131 cm, South Persia, Sirjan
MacDonald, BRIAN W., Tribal Rugs. Treasures of the Black Tent. Woodbridge 1997, pl. 78
This square Afshar cover was woven in the Sirjan region. A light red box shape surrounded by a wide green outline decorated with sharp lateral sawteeth lies in the middle of the dark red field. The box contains a small central diamond. The field is woven in the slitless tapestry technique, while the white serrated band surrounding the field and the small decorative motifs are brocaded. There are elaborately braided side finishes all around. Sofrehs were used as bases when making bread dough or as wrapping cloths for the bread to keep it fresh.
Very good condition.
