Description
second half 19th century, 178 x 138 cm, North West Persia, Kurdistan
COOTNER, CATHRYN, Flat-Woven Textiles. The Arthur D. Jenkins Collection. Vol. I. Washington 1981, no. 12
MARTIN, HEINZ, Orientteppiche. Erkennen-Kaufen-Erhalten. Munich 1981, ill. 15
A diamond-shaped, white central medallion with pendants that encloses small flowering shrubs lies in a midnight blue field densely filled with offset rows of botehs. The spandrels are decorated with narrow vertical stripes. The three repeats seen in this item - botehs, shrubs and stripes – belong to the traditional repertoire used by the weavers of these kilims. They were interchangeable and are encountered in different combinations.
Very good condition, original finishes all around. Provenance: Siedek Collection, Dusseldorf
