Item Details
Description
first quarter 20th century, 211 x 152 cm, North Persia
Until a few decades ago, kilims from the Mazandaran province to the north of Tehran were scarcely known in Europe. Originally they were made solely for home use, until commercial production began around 1970. Woven on narrow looms, the panels are later shortened to the required length and sewn together. Mazandaran kilims always have abstract geometric designs without any additional motifs or Islamic symbols. This example from the pre-commercial period with three vertical panels has a design of coloured horizontal stripes in varying widths, some of which are brocaded in fine lines.
Very good condition.
