Item Details
Description
RUBINSTEIN, ANTON. (1829-1894). Russian composer and one of the greatest pianists of the 19th- century; founder of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. ALS. (“Ant. Rubinstein”). 1p. 8vo. Baden-Baden, July 9, 1863. On a single folded sheet of his monogrammed and engraved stationery. To Mr. Rosenhain (likely German composer JAKOB ROSENHAIN, 1813-1894). In German with translation.

“Lachner begs me to play my opera for him; he comes tomorrow morning at 11 o’clock – I beg you therefore to give the score to the bearer of this, and if you are interested, come tomorrow, too. – As we artists shall be among ourselves, I will not be embarrassed to sing with all my voice. –

With warmest greetings to you and your wife I remain your very pretending [“vorspielender”] and also very playful [“verspielender”]...”

A child prodigy, Rubinstein, first played before Tsar Nicholas I at the age of 14. Under the patronage of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, he rose to prominence in the musical circles of Saint Petersburg displaying his virtuosity while performing his own compositions in Russia and across Europe, and earning the attention of Felix Mendelssohn and Giacomo Meyerbeer. In 1859, under the patronage of the grand duchess, he founded the Russian Music Society, the first music school in Russia, which was succeeded by the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1862, where Rubinstein served as director. A prolific composer, Rubinstein profoundly influenced Josef Hoffman, Sergei Rachmaninov and Josef Lhevinne. His operas include Dmitry Donskoy, The Demon, Die Maccabäer, and the 1862 Feramors, perhaps the opera mentioned in our letter, which had its world premiere in Dresden of February 24, 1863.

German composer and conductor Ignaz Lachner (1807-1895) held a succession of important music director positions across Germany including, at the time of our letter, Kappelmeister at Frankfurt’s Stadttheater.

Rosenhain, like Rubinstein, was a friend of Felix Mendelssohn, and died the same year as Rubinstein in Baden-Baden.

Folded with some minor wear. In very good condition.
