Description

A pair of George III silver two-handled salts Matthew Boulton & John Fothergill, Birmingham 1777 Oval Neo Classical form with reed and ribbon rims with upswept loop handles and acanthus upper junction and the lower junction joining the four elongated leg supports with claw feet, the underside with acanthus leaves centred with an applied quatrefoil, interiors gilt, the sides engraved with a shield armorial for Callaghan of Ireland, impaling Ponsonby, and monogram LL below a Viscounts coronet, length 12.5cm, weight 8.7oz. Footnotes: Provenance: With Mary Cooke Antiques Limited 2015 The Patrick and Mavis Walker Silver Collection The engraved arms are for Cornelius O'CALLAGHAN (1741-1797), who was in 1785 created Baron Lismore in the Irish Peerage, and his wife Frances PONSONBY (1757-1823). They married in 1774. Cornelius O'CALLAGHAN (1741-1797) was the son of Thomas O'CALLAGHAN (1713-1778) by Sarah DAVIS (1715-1744). Until 1785 he served as an MP for Fethard co. Tipperary in the Irish Parliament. Frances PONSONBY was the daughter of John PONSONBY (1713-1787), an Anglo-Irish politician, by Lady Elizabeth CAVENDISH (1727-1796) daughter of William CAVENDISH (1698-1755) 3rd Duke of Devonshire. Their son Cornelius O'CALLAGHAN (1775-1887) 2nd Baron Lismore and Irish Whig politician was in 1806 created Viscount Lismore in the Irish Peerage. Later in 1808 he married Lady Eleanor BUTLER (1788-1859) daughter of John BUTLER (1740-1795) 17th Earl Ormonde by Lady Frances Susan Elizabeth WANDERSFORD (1754-1830). The second engraving was added, no earlier than 1806, for the 1st Viscount. The armorial contains no crest and we expect that it was first intended for the use of Frances O'CALLAGHAN nee PONSONBY.
