Watercolor and pastel on Bristol board, signed and dedicated, "To Mary Gilman" in the lower right corner of image, mounted and matted (six-inch crack repaired at verso and lightly touched up on recto); 21 ¼ x 17 ¼ in.
Painter and print-maker Margaret Jordan Patterson, the daughter of a Maine sea captain, was born at sea on her father's ship near Java. She continued to live in New England throughout her life. Beginning in 1895, she studied painting at the Pratt Institute under Arthur Wesley Dow (1857-1922) and was later taught woodcut printmaking by Ethel Mars (1876-1959). Her stunning paintings and prints, overflowing with soft colors, are held by numerous institutions worldwide, including the Smithsonian.
