Description
Manner of Jan Miense Molenaer, Dutch (1610-1668) Figures in a Crowded Tavern attributed in an old inscription (on the reverse) and a label (affixed to the reverse of the frame); inscribed '57' (on the reverse); with a fragmentary wax seal (on the reverse) oil on panel 37.0 x 49.0 cm (14 9/16 x 19 5/16 in). framed 53.0 x 65.0 x 6.0 cm (20 7/8 x 25 11/16 x 2 3/8 in). Footnotes: Provenance A Newport, Rhode Island, estate. N.B. This work has been examined via digital images by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD). RKD scholars have not been able to find a painting that may have served as a direct prototype for the present work, so suggest that it was painted by a 17th-century artist in the manner of Molenaer.
