Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A pair of CDVs featuring soldiers, likely members of the 7th NY state militia, posed just outside of a tent at "Camp Cameron, May 1861."
Group portrait of 6 soldiers and one African American servant sitting and standing in the opening of a tent labeled "No. 21" at top and surmounted by an American flag. The man on the viewer's right holds a dog on his lap, and he and 3 of the other soldiers hold pipes in their mouths. Various firearms and accoutrements are visible throughout the image, including a haversack bearing a large numeral "7," which can be seen under the soldier seated at center. Verso bears ink caption, "'Camp Cameron,' May, 1861" and inscribed identifications of most of the subjects in the image including: "1. Coggill." "2. Jacobson." "3. 'Contraband.'" "4. Ellis." "6. Grant." and "7. Ke[rn?]ie." -- Group portrait of 5 soldiers (3 of whom are also in the first image) sitting and standing in the opening of what appears to be the same tent as the first image. This time, the man on the viewer's right is holding the dog on a box to the side of him rather than in his lap. He and two of the other men hold pipes or cigars in their mouths. Camp dishes can be seen sprawled on the ground and on a table inside the tent. Verso bears ink caption, "'Camp Cameron,' May, 1861" and inscribed identifications of most of the subjects in the image including: "1. Ellis." "2. Jacobson." "3. Grant (of Boston.)" "4. 'What is it'?" and "5. Ke[rn?]ie." -- Together, 2 CDVs on cardstock mounts. Both are toned to greater/lesser degrees, and feature some spotting and wear to print edges/corners.
Though all of the last names listed on the versos of these cartes cannot be found within the HDS listing for the 7th New York State Militia, it is likely that some served with that regiment or at least encamped together with the regiment at Camp Cameron in May of 1861.
