[ENSLAVEMENT & ABOLITION]. Manuscript inventory of property sold from the estate of John Hodges, including enslaved individuals. Lawrence County, Alabama, 24 July 1840.
"A List of the Sold property of Jno. S. Hodges Decd." 4pp, 8 x 10 in. (toning, light soil, creasing). Docketed verso, by clerk of Lawrence County, 29 July 1840.
The inventory lists the sale of "3 Negros man woman & child" for $1,725 and "1 [Negro] boy" for $905 to "Wm. Pruit." The 1840 U.S. Federal Census locates a "W. Prewitt" of Lawrence County, Alabama, who enslaved 63 men, women, and children.
