Description: Huge oil on metal painting by John Singleton Copley depicting Watson and the Shark from the 18th century. A late eighteenth-century scenario of 14-year-old English lad Brook Watson being attacked off the coast of Havana, Cuba, while his rescuers strive to save him, in excellent quality and preservation. Watson lost his leg in battle, but he lived to become Mayor of London and a Member of Parliament. Copley created multiple copies of the piece, of which this is considered to be one; the others are kept by the Detroit Institute of Arts and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. enclosed in an artisanal gilded oval foliate frame. Size: about 31" by 25" when framed. Origin: A private collection in Somerset, UK.
