Thirteen Artists Awardee Angelito Antonio’s rendition of the Filipina as a mother uses his signature vibrant and often dramatic color scheme to depict the subject. In shades of black and sepia, Antonio’s unique composition of the scene echoes that of his professor in UST Vicente Manansala; however, while Manansala’s figure retains its shape despite its cubism, Antonio distorts his with far more aggression. His hues show sharp delineation, cutting a striking figure as the colors start and end on an abrupt note. Antonio's dexterity as a folk genre artist needs no introduction. His depictions of the common Filipino – from the cockfighters to the vendors down to the family unit – are imbued with the vibrancy that is inherent in the culture he finds himself in. This work puts into the forefront the backbreaking endeavor of the mother as the shining light of the family. (Hannah Valiente)
