Piranesi, Giovanni Battista (Italian, 1720-1778), Veduta della vasta Fontana di Trevi anticamente detta l'Acqua Vergine [View of the Trevi Fountain, Formerly called the Acqua Vergine], mid to late 18th century, etching on laid paper, fleur de lis watermark, impression 15.75 x 21.5 inches, full sheet 18.75 x 24.5 inches, unframed. A single plate from Vedute di Roma [Views of Rome], Piranesi's famous work, first printed in the late 1740s, showing Roman buildings, ruins and monuments, primarily marketed to European visitors on the Grand Tour. Provenance: from the collection of a retired librarian of art and architecture.
Condition
In good antique condition, soft vertical crease down the center, light staining in the margins; the sheet appears to have undergone a professional reduction of discoloration at some point.
