Description
AutographsExcellent “James Madison” Signed Ships Papers

JAMES MADISON, 4th President of the United States.
Partially Printed Vellum Document Signed, “James Madison,” as President, dated May 29, 1810, New York, Choice Extremely Fine. This 16” x 11”, scallop-top Ship’s Paper was issued to the “Brig Catharine Augusta of New York,” a 256 ton vessel “mounted with eight guns navigated with nineteen men.” Signed, “James Madison” at bottom, as well as “S Smith” as Secretary of State, and further Countersigned by “David Gelston” as Collector of Customs for the Port of New York, all in brown ink. The usual light folds present and two trivial holes in upper left that do not affect the beautiful engravings of the ship and lighthouse at top. The official white embossed paper Seal is fully intact at lower left. Madison’s signature is a hair light but completely and easily readable. An impressive, far above average quality document of premium value, suitable for framing and display.
