Description
Netherlands, mid-18th century
Presumably Dutch battle painter of the 18th century
Dimensions: 86.5 x 116 cm
Good condition
Provenance: Private collection, Germany
Rich in figures and with some topographic freedom comes this painting of a presumably Dutch artist, who seems to have been deeply inspired by Jan van Huchtenburgh (1647-1733)
The present painting is the work of an artist, presumably active in the Netherlands in the mid-18th century. It depicts an atmospheric battle scene with soldiers and horses. The scenery is surrounded by the smoke of the canons and presents the figures only vaguely. The composition seems deeply related to paintings by Jan van Huchtenburgh (1647-1733), who was active as a horse and battle painter in The Hague and Amsterdam. The present work may be especially related to van Huchtenburgh, regarding the crowded fight choreographies and the appearance of the cloud and smoke formations.
The painting is in good condition considering its age. The canvas is relined and taped along the edges. The varnish is browned and the painting bears areas of retouching underneath the varnish. The size of the stretcher is 86.5 x 116 cm. The wooden frame is also in good condition with small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 98 x 127 cm. (cbo)
