Description
A pair of vintage WWI service medals, both issued to George Ross, #1375652, A.E.F. (American Expeditionary Forces) in Europe during WWI, Mule Corps. ("Mule Skinner"), saw considerable action including Verdun. He was then sent off to Egypt to investigate the possible use of camels in the European theater as "pack" animals. The first is a WWI Victory Medal with three bars, The front of the medal depicts winged Victory standing facing, holding a sword and a shield, the bars are engraved 'St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Defensive Sector. The back of the medal a shield and fasces and reads The Great War For Civilization' and names the various allied countries. L: 3 1/2 in (8.9 cm), Dia: 1 2/5 in (3.6 cm). Intact and extremely well preserved. - The second medal is WWI Army of Occupation Germany medal with bar. The front depicts John J. Pershing and the reverse depicts and eagle whose claws grip the walls of a town, legends reads US ARMY OF OCCUPATION GERMANY. Dia: 3.2 cm. In perfect condition, both medals with original boxes and with original shipping boxes as sent from the Depot Officer of the US Army. Ex Los Angeles private collection.
