(d. 2008) American bomber pilot of the Enola Gay which delivered the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, August 6, 1945. Fine content A.L.S. penned on the verso of a history student's letter to him, 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.]. Tibbets explains why the atomic bomb was used: "...The use of the A-bombs was neither 1) retaliatory nor 2) revengeful. Their use was a direct act of war for this singular purpose of 'imposing our will on the enemy' to bring about an 'unconditional' surrender...". Fine, sold with a copy of his memoir: "Return of the Enola Gay", privately printed, 340pp. 8vo., signed and dated in 2004 on the frontis portrait. Fine.
