19th century AD. A pair of mulberry paper images in glazed frames, each depicting a nimbate Bodhisattva seated on a lotus-flower dais with female on his lap facing holding symbols in his hands; one with red-tinted skin and flower symbol, the other with blue-tinted skin and wheel symbol. 474 grams total, 19 x 16.5cm each (7 1/2 x 6 1/2"). Ex Swiss collection; acquired 1980s. The image of a Bodhisattva with female companion is known as Yab Yum, literally meaning Father, Mother and represents the union of compassion and insight that is the state of the enlightened being.
