Provenance
Grace Borgenicht Gallery, Inc., New York
In 1957, Wolf Kahn moved to Venice after studying painting in New York with renowned abstract expressionist painter Hans Hoffman. He later said that looking out at the water in Venice changed his palette completely. This extremely rare early pastel shows both the influence of Abstract Expressionism as well as the artist’s new-found interest in waterscapes. The back of the frame bears the label of Grace Borgenicht Gallery in New York, which the artist joined in 1956. This work comes directly from the original owner who purchased the pastel from the gallery.
