Description
Inked signature reading ‘Gen H.J. Hunt/USA’ on 3 x 1.7 inch card stock. Fine autograph of one of the finest Artillery Officers of the war. Henry J. Hunt was born in Detroit in 1819, graduate of U.S. military Academy in 1839, served in Canada border disturbance of that year and afterwards was stationed at western forts. Promoted 1st Lt. in 1846. During the Mexican War he was Beveted Capt. For bravery at Contreras and Churubusco, and Major for services at Chapultepec, was also engaged at Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, San Antonio, Molino del Rey, where he was twice wounded, and in the assault and capture of Mexico City. After the war was promoted to Capt. And put in command of Harpers Ferry, promoted Major may 14, 1861 and during the battle of Bull Run was in command of the Union artillery on the left. After a brief period working on the defense of Washington he was placed on the staff of Gen. McClellan with the rank of Colonel and put in charge of organizing the artillery reserves for the Army of the Potomac, which he commanded at the battle of Gaines’ Mill. Had two horses shot from under him while covering McClellan’s retreat to Marvin Hill. Was promoted Brig. Gen of Vols. in Sept 1862 and chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac. Hunts direction of the artillery during Pickets Charge at Gettysburg was masterful and devastating to the Confederate forces in his line of fire. Served throughout the war and with great skill directing artillery for the Army of the Potomac. Was beveted Brig. Gen. then Major Gen. for services during the war and was made Colonel of the 5th U.S. Artillery on April 4, 1869, retired from active service in 1883 and died in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 11, 1889.
