Bob Roberts
Having started as a large-scale Surrealist painter, Bob Roberts' tattoo fascination gradually outgrew is painting pursuits. As a curious preteen he would wander into the tattoo shops where he was mesmerized by Flash Art that adorned the walls. After abandoning formal painting, Bob began tattooing in 1973 at The Pike after completing apprenticeships under Bob Show and Col. Bill Todd spanning three years. While making a name for himself in the industry, Roberts moved to San Francisco and worked under Ed Hardy before moving to New York City to open his first shop, Spotlight Tattoo. After three years of the Big Apple, he moved back to Los Angeles and opened Spotlight Tattoo back west. Roberts is still tattooing clients in the same location 20 years later with his son Charlie and daughter Ava, alongside a crew of half a dozen other world class artists. One of the last living tattoo legends, Bob Roberts paints at home in the traditional medium of watercolor on paper creating dense, fanatically-detailed compositions that draw from traditional American tattoo Flash, Tibetan Thangka paintings, and outlaw motorcycle imagery.
