Item Details
Description
Description: Eastern Bloc optics/binoculars are regarded as some of the better field glasses available. The East German DF 7x40 (often called "Checkpoint Charlie" binoculars) may well have been the best of them all, with superior tolerances and high production standards not commonly found in comparable Soviet/Russian models. Construction & quality is top notch. The binoculars are fully rubber armored and waterproof. The aluminum housing seems to be bomb-proof and very useful in strong sunlight, especially in an environment with lots of reflected light, (sea, desert, snow). The lenses have a T3 Magnesium Fluoride, anti-reflex multi-coat which IOR claims to provide 98% light transmission. This provides good contrast for normal lighting and cuts down on eyestrain when viewing in bright conditions. IOR provides a set of amber filters that are Included with each set of IOR binoculars and found in each lens cap. This filter is best used on extremely bright days and whiteout conditions. When snapped into the ocular lens housing, the amber filters provide a very high level of contrast for hazy and harsh bright-light conditions. An interesting feature of the IOR 7x40-R is its seemingly three dimensional view. History: The 7x40 DF (Doppel-Fernrohr) of the NVA (Nationale Volksarmee) was introduced in the 1960s and was the first binocular built by Carl Zeiss Jena from scratch since the days of WWII. It replaced the 7x50 Binoctar, 10x50 Dekaris and 8x30 Deltrentis, individual focus versions of Jena's earlier classical line of binoculars. The 7x40 DF was given a short ('stubby') body shape, thereby keeping it rather compact, despite of its large prisms and considerably high weight. With its thick rubber armor, its large oculars with long eye-relief (suitable for use with gas-mask) and the eye catching window of its infrared detector re-charger, the DF had become the classical example of a full fledged military binocular, the blueprint of later 7x40 clones which adopted the same design philosophy. In 1980, it was replaced with the 7x40 EDF, a roof-prism construction which was more compact, but with smaller field of view. The serial number of 3390911 indicates a production in 1964.
