Provenance: Campbell Ewald, acquired the artwork circa 1975.
Bio: Born in the Midwest, Paul Jenkins was able to study in New York City during the height of the city’s dominance over the art world. With the assistance of the GI Bill, Jenkins attended the Art Students’ League and was heavily influenced by his instructors Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Morris Kantor. Later in his career, Jenkins made repeated journeys between New York and Paris. Jenkins began studying Eastern religion and philosophy, especially interested in the I Ching, and the work of Carl Jung, all of which had a profound impact on his later work. His religious and philosophical studies inspired Jenkins to create a literal and metaphysical sense of dynamism while also maintaining a sense of unity in his pieces.
