Description
An Egyptian rounded copper axe head, Middle Kingdom – Early New Kingdom, c. 2061 – 1292 BC, of rounded form with long lug handles. Reddish patina beneath greenish encrustation. Rare! The rounded axe was an earlier Middle Kingdom type which lasted, at least for ceremonial use, into the 18th Dynasty, as examples with the names of Amenhotep II & III attest to. L: 4 ¼ in (10.8cm). Cf. Petrie, Tools and Weapons (London, 1917), pl. IV, no. 120 for an example bearing the name of Amenhotep III; Ex collection of the Czech diplomat Stanislav Kovar (1889-1962).
