Description
Nineteenth-century pair of encased photographs, one a daguerreotype of what may have been the homestead of the family whose photographs have been described in previous lots, and one a likely ambrotype of an unidentified young man. Both are enclosed in their frame boxes, called union cases in their day, made of lightweight wood covered in a thin layer of embossed leather. Their exterior conditions are in quite good antique shape, with hinges intact. The photographs are under glass and framed in ornate brass. The daguerrotype shows wear common to that type of photograph: tarnish around the edges, and fading of the image, and its interior brass frame shows some deterioration, but the lining is still very nice, and some details of the home are still clear. The smaller photo of the young man is in very good shape, as is the interior brass frame and velvet lining of its union case, and the tiny hook-clasps on both cases work perfectly. The larger case measures about 3.75 by 5 inches, and the smaller one is 2.5 by 3 inches.
