Revolutionary War Soldier “BOUNTY NOTE” Bond Form
February 28, 1777-Dated Revolutionary War, Partially-Printed Document, “BOUNTY NOTE” Massachusetts Fiscal Paper, Choice Very Fine.
Anderson MA-6 (Rarity 4, Very Scarce). Masschusetts Fiscal Paper Signed, “H. Gardner,” as Treasurer and cosigned by “W. Cooper” and “N. Appleton” as Committee members, one page, measures about 6.5” X 8.5”. Enbossed seal. Some tone across portions of the right center and bottom. This “BOUNTY NOTE” form is indented at left with a large decorative border design. It reads, in full:
“No. 18514. -- State of Massachusetts-Bay. - The 28th Day of Febr. 1777. --- For Value received for the Use of the State of Massachusetts-Bay, I do in Behalf of said State, hereby promise and oblige myself, and Successors in the Office of Treasurer, to pay to the Possessor of this Note the Sum of TEN POUNDS, on the Sixth Day of Decem. 1780, with Interest at Six per Cent. per Annum; the Interest to be paid Annually. Witness my hand, - (Signed) H. Gardner.”
Handwritten on verso: “Leicester, the 22 Sept. 1777. Received four pounds ten shillings in part of the within note. (signed) John Robbins”. A scarce original, well printed example.
